Callers to a radio station in London have dubbed Rotorua the friendliest place on earth to hitch hike.
Rotorua Tourism Manager Don Gunn says a BBC radio show discussion on hitch hiking was inundated with calls, texts and emails recalling how generous Rotorua people are. The British tourists said locals offered them meals, free accommodation and even allowed hitch hikers to use vehicles. Mr Gunn says as a result of the programme, he received a call from the station asking why locals treat hitch hikers so well. He says people are warned against hitch hiking but the experiences of British people in Rotorua was significant and memorable enough for them to phone in to the radio programme. He says the tourism authority will definitely use the issue as a marketing ploy when advertising in the UK. - Newstalk ZB
