Bali escape: it's showtime

After my recent success on the trapeze (yes, I'm still chuffed about that) I was extremely excited to hear that some real superstars were walking among us.

Members of the Moscow Circus are staying at the resort and are putting on shows every week for a month. We'd seen some of them around the village (they're hard to miss - they're the ones doing the triple somersaults on the bungy trampoline, just for fun) and even snuck a peek as they rehearsed one day.

Last night they performed in front of a packed crowd. First up was a trapeze artist - a long, leggy blonde who hung from a circular trapeze right above the crowd and contorted herself around it. She hung from her hands, then her waist, then her feet, then one heel. It was spellbinding.

In between each act a troupe of dancers (in different cabaret-style costumes each time) or a clown performed.

There was a juggler who flung his sticks around with gay abandon, and a hoop artist who deftly manoeuvred about seven hoops at once - while standing on one leg with the other over her head.

A girl in a sailor suit swung about on a rope, shinning up it like a monkey before wrapping it around her waist and spinning down like a yo-yo, stopping just before the floor.

The trapeze artist returned to perform a contortionist routine. While she stood on her hands, or sat on her own head, her toes were picking up an opaque veil and draping it around her.

The highlights of the show had to be the male acrobats. First a blond fellow appeared in nothing but a pair of white jeans.

With a smirk he swung himself up onto a series of blocks on poles and proceeded to defy gravity with a series of one-armed handstands before launching into the splits. I'm impressed the jeans survived that exploit.

Later two muscly fellows appeared for the finale. They were covered head to toe in body paint to resemble statues and launched into a repeat of the pole-balancing act - together.

It wasn't quite Cirque du Soleil, but it was entertainment of a very high calibre and the crowd was transported. I'm sure I wasn't the only one gasping out loud at their exploits.

Maybe I'll ask that girl for some tips on my fledgling trapeze career.
