Bali escape: in the ocean

Bali is getting a name for itself as a surf destination - it's obvious as soon as you get to the baggage claim at Denpasar airport and see all the board bags circling.

Nusa Dua, where Club Med is situated, has good swells especially between December and March when the currents are stronger.  The Kuta area, Balangan and Sanur are also popular, with Ulu Watu in the Bukit peninsula being one of the more famous breaks.

Club Med offers a range of watersports at the village, as well as excursions further off. Snorkelling, windsurfing and kayaking off the beach are the main attractions.

Snorkelling trips are held a couple of times a day, just a short boat ride offshore at an area common to the resorts. Because of all the 'traffic' we had to stick together and keep to a trail.

Visibility was good at the start, with schools of brightly coloured tropical fish swarming around our feet and coral reefs just below. I was wishing I had an underwater camera so I could capture the amazing sights (you'll just have to imagine it until I win Lotto).

But further along the path the water got a lot deeper, and there was less to see. Sanu, our guide, insisted that the going was good if we'd only dive down ("It's only eight metres!") but this was more than my ears could handle.

Excursions from the village's Discovery Centre cost extra but could be worth it - they head out to Lembongan Island for a day's worth of snorkelling in a more sheltered area, as well as banana boat rides and a trip to a fishing village.

Along the beachfront there are also private operators from whom you can rent a jetski, or arrange to go parasailing.

I also had a go at windsurfing, something I've always wanted to try and never had the opportunity to do. It was somewhat less successful than my attempts to become a circus superstar - I think I would have had Laurenzo, our instructor, tearing his hair out if he'd had any.

I was one of those nightmare students who dutifully nods along during instruction on land, then somehow manages to do the complete opposite of every action out on the water, no matter what she tries.

Still, I managed to get up, sail along and turn in a wobbly sort of fashion, and I'm sure if I had more time here I'd feel a bit less uncoordinated.

UPDATE: After posting this blog, I headed to dinner, where the weekly sports awards were being held, and was promptly awarded a medal for my feeble attempts! Maybe I won't hang up my aquasocks just yet...
