Bali escape: time's up

All good things must come to an end, and so my time in Bali has drawn to a close. It's been a week of unrelenting heat, amazing sights and exhilaration.

I have to admit I was a tad cynical before embarking on the Club Med experience.

I had envisaged a "Hi-De-Hi" world of permanently grinning employee-clones and holidaygoers forced to join in everything from basket-weaving to aquarobics.

Now I'm a bit of a convert - it's nothing like that. The Club Med experience is definitely a bit removed from real life (which is why it's so important to discover the world outside its gates as well), but it really is a one-of-a-kind holiday.

G.O.s and guests alike come from all over the world, making for a great big melting pot for anyone who's keen to mix and mingle.

The all-inclusive nature of Club Med means you don't have to worry about your dwindling funds - handy when you're holidaying in a big group and trying to remember whose round it is next at the bar, or trying to find somewhere to eat that suits everyone's budget.

My week in numbers:

Trapeze catches accomplished: 2 (plus one failed attempt)
Tropical thunderstorms: 3
Cocktails consumed: no comment
Minutes spent Balinese dancing before giving up: 10
Average trips to the buffet per meal: 3
Monkeys seen: 1
Posies presented to me by toothless old men: 1

A week in Bali is definitely not long enough - there's so much to see and do. Here are some of the other attractions I would have liked to visit, if I'd had more time:

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot is a temple that was built on a rock in the sea, supposedly by a 15th century prophet. It can be found at Tabanan, about 20km from Denpasar, and is one of seven sea temples around Bali. The area's meant to be pretty touristy, but worth it to see such an impressive construction.

Jimbaran Beach

This is a beautiful white sand beach on the Bukit Peninsula, famous for its seafood warung (food stalls) serving freshly-caught delicacies: lobster, fish, prawns, squid and more. You can pick what you want, have it cooked how you like and served to your table at the water's edge.

Gunung Batur

Batur is Bali's second highest mountain and still active, most recently erupting 46 years ago. We viewed Batur and the beautiful lake at the bottom from a restaurant before beginning our village tour, but the mountain is said to be well worth the climb, with a crater lake, lava flows and hot springs to be enjoyed.

Bukit Sari

North of Denpasar is one of Bali's ‘monkey forests' - this one has a temple called Pura Bukit Sari in its midst, but the real attraction is the cheeky monkeys (who will steal your sunglasses if you're not careful - be warned).

Have you travelled to Bali? What are your top tips for other travellers?
