Montenegro

Tiny Montenegro's Mediterranean coastline plays at the feet of Balkan mountains. Its walled towns and mixture of Orthodox and Catholic churches and its cultural blend of Montenegrin, Serb, Bosniak, Albanian and Croatian have survived the vicissitudes of history and are breezing in to the future.

Things to See in Montenegro

Stari Bar
5km E of Bar Bar off the Ulcinj road S Montenegro

The beautiful remains of Stari Bar sit on top of Lundža hill. Steep cliffs surround the old town and render it inaccessible from all but one side. Findings of pottery and metal have dated occupancy as far back as 800 BC. During the 3rd century, the occupying Romans destroyed the old settlement and abandoned it for a location closer to the sea.

Durmitor National Park
immediately W of Žabljak W Montenegro

Ice has carved out a dramatic mountain landscape in this national park. Eighteen lakes dot the Durmitor Range, the largest being Crno Jezero (Black Lake). Dominating the park is the 2287m (7500ft)-high mass of Meed. The 1.3km(0.81mi)-deep Tara Canyon slits open the earth's crust for 80km (50mi) and is best seen from a rock promontory at Curevac.

National Museum of Montenegro
Cetinje Novice Cerovia bb

The neobaroque structure was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and was once the number one institution in Cetinje. The museum shows periods from pre-Slavic Montenegro all the way to the Yugoslav times, together with exhibits of a large variety of weapons and the coat (with three bullet holes in the back) of Duke Danilo, who was killed in 1860.
