Transport options in Central Otago

Central Otago is brilliantly central (hence its name). You can approach the region from any direction. For much of the year, driving conditions are excellent. Only in winter will you need to take special care. To enjoy some of the region's more remote sights, consider renting a motorhome - in many places, you'll have the splendid scenery all to yourself.

Getting to and from Central Otago


By Road:
Drive to Central Otago from the north on State Highway 8; from the south on State Highway 6 or 8; from the west on State Highway 6; or from the east on State Highway 85 (known to locals as the 'Pig Root').
The following companies provide regular coach services to Central Otago from Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch: Intercity, Atomic Shuttles, Southern Link.
By Air:
The closest airport to Central Otago is in Queenstown, just over an hour's drive away. Queenstown international airport is well served by Air New Zealand and Qantas. Air New Zealand flies direct from Sydney and Melbourne year round and extends this service to encompass Brisbane in winter. Qantas also offers winter services out of Sydney and Brisbane. Domestically, Queenstown connects to all the main centres.
You can collect a rental car at the airport or catch a shuttle to Queenstown and connect with a coach service to Cromwell or Alexandra.

Getting around Central Otago

A rental car or motorhome will give you the independence and flexibility to explore Central Otago at your own pace. Mountain bikes can be rented in Clyde, if you plan to do the Rail Trail.
Local tour operators can take you around the vineyards, historic sights and natural features of the region.
