The Manawatu region is intersected by State Highway 1 and the main trunk railway line. It's also served by two airports. However you choose to arrive, you'll find it convenient to rent a car or campervan for local explorations. The attractive country roads are generally well maintained and easy to drive. It's very easy to base yourself in Wanganui, Palmerston North or one of the smaller towns and commute to local sights and activities.

By Road:
The main road route from Auckland to Wellington provides direct access to places like Waiouru, Taihape, Mangaweka, Ohakea and Levin.
An alternative route from Auckland to Wellington takes travellers through Taumaranui, National Park (Whakapapa) and Ohakune before connecting with State Highway 1 at Waiouru.
The main route to Hastings and Napier travels through the Tararua towns of Woodville and Dannevirke.
The main route from New Plymouth to Woodville takes travellers through Wanganui and Palmerston North.
An excellent bus service connects all four of the region's districts.
Cycling is an extremely popular way to enjoy the picturesque country roads.

Air New Zealand provides daily flights from Palmerston North Airport to Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson, and Christchurch
There are three daily services from Wanganui to Auckland.
