Transport options in Nelson

Whether you arrive in Nelson by air or by road, the approach is breathtaking. Looking down from a domestic flight, you'll see the magnificence of the Marlborough Sounds and the big blue of Tasman Bay. If you catch the Cook Strait ferry to Picton, you'll enjoy a closer view of the sounds. The road between Picton and Nelson is a real eye opener - pause at the lookouts to take in the panorama.

Getting to and from Nelson

By Road:
Nelson Region is well serviced by coaches travelling to and from the region. Self-drive travellers who cross Cook Strait on the vehicular ferry can choose to drive to Nelson via Blenheim or along the very scenic Queen Charlotte Drive.

By Air:
Nelson city is the fourth busiest airport in New Zealand. Two airlines run regular air services to and from Nelson airport. Motueka and Takaka airfields are bases for charter services and scenic flights.

Flying times:

  • 1 hour 20 minutes direct from Auckland
  • 35 minutes from Wellington
  • 45 minutes from Christchurch

  • By Sea:
    Passenger and vehicular ferry services operate between Wellington and Picton, with regular connections to Nelson by bus. Limited passenger space is also available on freight ferries operating between Nelson and Wellington.

    Getting around Nelson


    Car hire, coach charter, bicycle and motorcycle hire are good options for those who want to experience the Nelson region at their own pace.

    There are regular bus services from Nelson city to the entrance points of Abel Tasman National Park. Water taxis are available to take you into the park.

    For those with limited time, helicopter or fixed-wing scenic flights are popular.
