Transport options in Northland

Many travellers discover Northland by following the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, which begins and ends in Auckland. The route lets you explore both coasts, and you'll find the driving easy. A campervan is an excellent way to combine freedom and comfort. For fit people with plenty of time, cycling the Twin Coast route is also an option.

Getting to and from Northland

By Road:
State Highway 1 runs up the east coast of Northland, all the way to Cape Reinga. State Highway 12 provides access to the west coast. From Auckland, it takes about 2 ½ hours to drive to Whangarei or 3 ½ hours to Paihia.

  • By Air:
    There are three domestic airports in Northland - Whangarei, Kerikeri (Bay of Islands) and Kaitaia. Regular scheduled services operate to and from Auckland.
    Getting around Northland
    Rental cars are available from Whangarei, the Bay of Islands and Kaikohe. Customised minivan tours of the far north can be arranged in Paihia. Tours of 90 Mile Beach can be arranged in Whangarei, Paihia, Doubtless Bay and Kaitaia.
