In the lush Western slopes of the Rheidol Valley, the Rivers Mynach and Rheidol tumble together in a narrow gorge. Just above the confluence, the Rheidol drops 90m (295ft) in a series of spectacular waterfalls. Devil's Bridge is itself a famous crossing-point where three bridges are stacked above each other.
Caernarfon CastleBuilt between 1283 and 1301, this castle was Edward I's most impressive stronghold. The polygonal towers and colour-banded masonry were based on Constantinople's 5th-century walls, and set it apart from the other castles of North Wales.
St Govan's ChapelThis sliver of a chapel, wedged into a slot in the cliffs just out of reach of the sea, dates from the 5th or 6th century. The land arrives here flat as a tabletop and falls off to churning, thrashing surf. Bizarre rock formations rise offshore like spectres.
